Everything you need to know about landlord-tenant laws, security deposits, eviction procedures, and property management in Virginia.
Virginia offers strong opportunities for rental property investors, particularly in Northern Virginia (NOVA), Hampton Roads, and the Richmond metro area. Northern Virginia benefits from proximity to Washington D.C. and its federal workforce, while Hampton Roads has a stable military presence. The state has no rent control and relatively balanced landlord-tenant laws. Virginia landlords must comply with the Virginia Residential Landlord and Tenant Act (VRLTA), which provides clear guidelines for both parties. The state requires specific disclosures but gives landlords flexibility in lease terms and security deposit handling.
